CanadaGAP™ is a food safety program for companies that produce, pack and store fruits and vegetables. It is designed to help implement effective food safety procedures within fresh produce operations. Two manuals, one specific to Greenhouse operations, the second for other fruit and vegetable operations, have been developed by the horticultural industry and reviewed for technical soundness by Canadian government officials. The manuals are designed for companies implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and maintaining an effective food safety program.
Program participants must comply with food safety standards outlined by the program, and undergo and successfully complete audits in order to become CanadaGAP-certified.
Several Canadian buyers – including Loblaw Companies Limited, Mc- Cain Foods Canada, Simplot Canada and Lamb-Weston – are requiring that growers become certified under the CanadaGAP Program.
